About G.U.R.L.S.
Changing the game for girls and girls of color
G.U.R.L.S. Rock Summit takes the global movement to empower girls as change leaders to a new level. The Making a New Reality Foundation held its first G.U.R.L.S. Rock Summit in Oakland, CA on August 28, 2010. The summit is the first of many across the country leading to the first G.U.R.L.S. Global Leadership Summit in Washington DC in 2012.
As the Founder and President of I C HOPE: The Making a New Reality Foundation, I am so excited to present our new program. It is a conference of one’s own. As efforts continue to engage girls as the new generation of leaders, it is pivotal that girls of color be at center stage of the movement and not left behind in the serge forward. It is not sufficient to invite girls of color to the leadership table set by others, it is imperative that girls of color lead own and direct their own destines.
We made history on August 28, 2010. PROJECT G.U.R.L.S. launched to a sold out audience of almost 175 registrants. The importance of girls of color taking charge as global leaders was recognized by Oakland Mayor Ronald v. Dellums, Alameda County Board of Supervisors, California Assemble Member Sandre Swanson, California State Senator Loni Hancock, and U.S. Congressmember Barbara Lee.
The program provided a list of first ever offerings to girls of color including a partnership with international best sellers and authors of Emotional Intelligence 2.0, a unique cluster of Learning Centers covering STEM, entertainment & new media, entrepreneurship and healthy living and more. The highlight of the event included the now famous “Making a New Reality TV Show” where the girls are empowered to change their reality by utilizing the entertainment format.
The stage is now set to prepare for the G.U.R.L.S. Global Leadership Summit. Stay tuned for news on Rock Summits in Los Angeles and Atlanta coming in Spring 2011. We need your continued support, so please join us as a Sponsor or Community Partner. Become a member of the G.U.R.L.S. Leadership Network — the first ever private social network for girls and girls of color to share resources and learn more being global leaders.
Regards,
Raye Mitchell
